Items in green are direct verbiage from the NJ sick leave law

  1. Both full-time and part-time employees get a certain amount of paid sick leave every year based on the number of hours worked. Each employee accrues earned sick leave at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours of leave per benefit year.
  2. Employees can begin using earned sick leave accrued under this law 120 days after beginning employment
  3. Unused sick leave carries over from year to year (up to 40 hours). However, you can only use up to 40 hours of leave per benefit year.
  4. To request sick leave time, use the Isolved portal.
  5. Generally you cannot take more sick leave than you have accrued, but if you have an extenuating circumstance, please discuss it with RP. Sick leave that you do not take carries over from one year to the next, up to a maximum of 40 hours.
  6. An employee shall not be entitled to a payout of unused earned sick leave upon separation from employment.
See attached PDF for more details.

Notice and Benefit Year

As permitted by the law, NYGG requires seven days’ notice to use this time off unless it’s an emergency. As per NJ law, the employee is required to make a reasonable effort to schedule the time off so that it does not unduly disrupt the operations of the business.

The benefit year is per calendar year.
